I used to be broke and I used to be restless at the same time, a few years ago. I wanted to earn some extra money but every time I read an article about “how to start a side business” they always said that I needed to have some money to invest first. Buy inventory. Build a website. Run ads. I didn’t have any of it and most people don’t when they first start. So I sought out side hustles with no money, simply some time and a desire to get it done.
The discovery came as a surprise to me. The choices are more than I thought. I tried a few myself, over a bit of a long weekend, for curiosity’s sake and, oh, financial necessity. The following are what I learned and 15 ideas that are truly investment-free.
Why I Went Looking for Free Options First
I recall going through the side hustle blogs and feeling disheartened. Half were interested in purchasing a course before I would join. The other half seemed to think that I was already a celebrity, had a cool laptop to show off, or had money saved up!
None of that, that did not correspond to my situation. I had a phone, some hours on a Saturday and skills that I never really thought that I could sell. In most cases, this will be the case. It’s not about the money.
What I Tried That Weekend
I haven’t tried them all myself, but I tried some of them. I also talked to friends who tried the others. The following are a combination of personal experience and some of what I saw that worked for others.

Freelance Writing on Existing Platforms
I registered on a couple of freelance websites with just a bio and two writing samples. I already had samples from an old blog post. It was an afternoon before it was set up and within a week I had my first small gig.
Proofreading and Editing
An English teacher friend of mine began providing proofreading services for students and small business owners. He made use of Google Docs for everything. Nothing has to be purchased, no tools as it was side hustles with no money. Just careful reading and an eye for detail, he already had.
Virtual Assistant Work
I did not realise just how much there was for simple admin help. None of it is special software, just something that is already out there and free. Like Inbox management, scheduling, and basic research.
Selling Unused Items Online
This one seemed too easy but its is not. Same weekend I went through my closet and made a list of 10 things that I hadn’t worn in years. It’s nothing fancy, but it can be one of the quickest side hustles with no cash. You’re simply making money from what you already have.
Pet Sitting or Dog Walking
One neighbor of mine just asked around on her block and began walking people’s dogs. No app, no fees, just word of mouth and phone to set up times.
Tutoring in a Subject You Know Well
Tutoring one of my colleagues children in Maths for a few weeks, with only a notebook and video calls. It was a reminder of the vast amount of unused knowledge that most people have in their heads.
Social Media Management for Small Businesses
I needed to work at a local bakery near me. They wanted someone to post regularly and to respond to comments. The owner was not aware of what she was doing online. I offered to help her with my cell phone and free scheduling tools.
Transcription Work
This is more a test of patience than anything else. There is free transcription software available, and although the pay per project is minimal, it’s consistent work that requires only a laptop and some headphones.
Voiceover Work for Small Projects
I haven’t tried this myself. A friend was using the voice memo app on his phone to do voiceovers for little YouTube content creators. Just a decent enunciation and a quiet room. No studio, no fancy microphone.
Selling Digital Templates You Already Have
Anyone who’s created a resume template or simple spreadsheet for their own use, or a planner layout, that’s something people will pay for. I was able to take a budgeting spreadsheet and create a little Digi Product.
Offering Language Practice Sessions
It is truly a valuable thing to be bilingual, even if it is just a bit. I know somebody who began to give lesson of casual conversation via video call without certification, just fluency and patience.
Local Errand Running
People are willing to pay for things like grocery pickups, waiting in line for someone, small delivery errands. Just to help an older neighbor or busy parent out around the block.
Freelance Research Assistance
It’s common for students and small business owners. They need someone to take data and put it together in an understandable way. One of the more neglected side hustles with no money in advance. It just requires a good searching and writing.
Reselling Free or Thrifted Items
There are people who have entire side businesses looking for free things on local listings sites, sprucing them up, and selling them. It requires hard work, not investment. I have seen a person who has made a real stable monthly income from this side hustle with no money.
Offering Feedback or Consulting in Your Existing Job Skill
There is probably someone out there who can pay for whatever it is you are doing professionally. Somebody who came before you. I did some paid writing portfolio feedback sessions, simply based on my own experience and a video call link.
What I Actually Learned From This
The most important thing I learned from that weekend was not about the money, although it didn’t hurt to have a little extra cash. It was realizing the number of side hustles with no money. Just skills and abilities I never realized I could package up and sell.
None of these made me an instant rich man. Within days, a few imported small sums. Some others needed weeks to get going. But each of them began at the exact same time. No money out and no risk taken other than a small amount of time.
My advice to you if you’re in my situation. Broke but willing to try anything or is to stop waiting and start. Select one item from this list that you’re already reasonably good at, and just get started.
That’s all it took for me.
